T h e r e ’ s been a lot of discussion in the community about the wages paid to GRF employees. No one seems to think they’re too low—but some have expressed concern about whether they’re too high. Residents are right to pay close attention to salaries and wages, as they represented approximately 40% of the 2024 GRF expenses, making it our most significant operating expense. For those who prefer a deeper dive, I’ve included itemized figures at the end of this article.

Let’s look at the numbers: Salaries and wages increased from $7,117,705 in 2014 to $10,752,524 in 2024—an increase of roughly 51%. To put that in perspective, during the same time period:

California’s minimum wage rose from $9 to $16—a 78% increase, according to the California Department of Industrial Relations. While it’s true GRF doesn’t employ a large number of minimum-wage workers, rising entry-level pay generally drives up wages across all levels.

approximately 32%, affecting both labor costs and the cost of doing business in general.

Considering both these factors, a 51% wage increase over 10 years appears to be in the reasonable range. GRF employees play a vital role in maintaining and improving our 542-acre community.

As our infrastructure continues to age, the value of experienced, skilled staff becomes even more critical. Competitive pay is essential not only to attracting capable employees but to retaining the institutional knowledge and specialized skills that help our community function smoothly.

That said, some of the unease may stem from concerns about specific individuals—perhaps those perceived as overpaid, underperforming or both.

Oversight of employee compensation and performance, particularly at the senior levels, is the responsibility of the Executive Director and the GRF Board of Directors. I expect this area will receive close and appropriate scrutiny.
