TOURNAMENT POKER CLUB

Those who would like to play a fun and friendly game of Texas Hold ‘Em for a $5 buy-in can play with the Tournament Poker Club on Saturday, Sept. 5, in Clubhouse 6. Due to the GRF swap meet in the parking lot of Clubhouse 6 on Sept. 19, there will be no tournament that day. Regular tournaments are on the first three Saturdays of each month, starting with coffee, treats and registration at 10 a.m. Cards are in the air at 10:30. There is no late seating.

On Aug. 8, the club had a great turnout despite the very warm day—it might have had something to do with airconditioning availability—but a great time was had by all.

Every week there are special prizes for particular hands. The week’s high hand winners were Renate Watkins with a straight flush (4-8 hearts), Donna Hernandez (K-K-K-K-J) and Cleo Looney (K-K-K-K-10). Kathy Elliott won a prize for playing and winning with the promo hand of 3-10.

As the winners of their original table, the final table players were Shelly Yu, first place; Kathy Elliott, second; Wendy Wu, third; Debbie Casper, fourth; Nita Doyan, fifth; Shel Magnuson, sixth; Renato Villanueva, seventh; and Marvin Rollnick, eighth. The week’s final table was noteworthy because there were six women and two men playing. The women quickly dispatched the men, leaving six of the best women players to vie for the win.

Play continued until Yu and Elliott were heads up. In the final hand of the match, Yu had a pair of 10s, and Elliott had ace of spades and jack of diamonds. With her pair of 10s, Yu went all in before the flop and was called by Elliott. The flop came ace of hearts, 3 of clubs and king of clubs, which gave Elliott a pair of aces. The turn was a king of spades, and no help to Yu. The river card was a 10 of spades, giving Yu the win with three of a kind.

Yu has lived in Leisure World for six years and has been a member of the club for five years. This was her fifth final table win. She is a special education teacher and plays pickleball in Leisure World as well.
