Sea turtle eggs laid in Seal Beach moved to aquarium

AQUARIUM OF THE PACIFIC

On Sept. 16 and 19, two olive ridley sea turtle nests were discovered near Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge and Huntington Beach—the first confirmed natural sea turtle nests on the U.S. West Coast. On Sept. 25, biologists carefully collected the eggs and transferred them to the Aquarium of the Pacific, where they will be incubated in a temperaturecontrolled environment.

Due to hazardous surf conditions expected to coincide with high tides from Hurricane Polo, there was an elevated concern that the nests would be washed away. The eggs will be cared for and, if viable, are expected to hatch in 45-60 days, around the first week of November.
