LW Men’s Golf League

After a week’s hiatus due to the Labor Day weekend, 12 members of the Leisure World men’s golf league played the David L. Baker Executive Golf Course on Sept. 14. Hopes were that the break in the heat of past weeks would lead to better scoring and this was the case. All 12 of the golfers scored net under par with several exceptional scores posted by five of the players.

At par 62 and only 4,000 yards, Baker is designed to be played quicker than a full-size course. It has no elevation changes, but presents narrow, tree lined fairways with yawning bunkers and diabolically placed water hazards. The course was not in great shape, with the hot weather having taken its toll.

In spite of less-than-ideal playing conditions, there were low scores and 10 birdies—two by Dave LaCascia, Sam Choi, Steve Earl and Bruno Santillo, and one each by Tom Ross and Fujio Norihiro. The two closest to the pin challenges were won by Santillo and Larry Hillhouse. Santillo and Tom Ross had fewest putts for the round.

A flight winners (handicaps of 1-19): Norihiro and Santillo, first place; Choi, second; Earl, third; LaCascia, fourth; Gary Stivers, fifth; Jim Goltra and Hillhouse, sixth.

B flight winners (handicaps of 20 and higher): Randy Massaro, first place; Ross and Ron Jackson, second; third, Bob Munn, third.

The league plays every Monday at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. Advanced league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.

There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles are generously rewarded.
