The Leisure World America First Republican Club will hold the second annual member appreciation picnic luncheon on Saturday, Sept. 19. Unlike last year, it will be held inside the air-conditioned Clubhouse 1, beginning at 11:30 a.m. with guest speakers at 1 p.m. The picnic lunch is free for members, and people are asked to bring a dessert to share.
The lunch will be a meal with two tacos, beans and rice with bottled water or soda. Those who plan to attend should call Hope Horning at 714-833-1654 by 5 p.m. today, Sept. 17, to make a reservation. This allows the club to plan for the number of meals ordered from the Taco Tuesday (Koffel’s) food truck.
Guest speakers at the event will be Gracey Van Der Mark for State Assembly, District 72; Austin J. Edsell for Coast Community College District, Trustee-Area 1; and Perla Mendosa for Seal Beach City Council, District 1. All Leisure World residents are welcome to come to hear from the speakers after the lunch.
Club members wrapped up addressing Reform California envelopes the last week of August. Now, club members are stuffing envelopes with specific voter guides regarding localized candidates and the 14 statewide propositions. The Reform California headquarters is open Monday-Saturday 8 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. to stuff envelopes. Club members can call 714-660-8133 for a ride to the headquarters in Huntington Beach, or call Hope Horning at 714-833-1654 for the address.
Club volunteers will continue canvassing throughout September to distribute the club’s voter guide. The club’s goal is to have its voter guide door hangers delivered before the vote-by-mail ballots are received. Call Horning at 714-833-1654 to volunteer.
The club’s information booth will be outside of Clubhouse 6 from 9-11 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in October. People who have misplaced or not received a voter guide can stop by the booth for another copy. Members are reminded of the importance of civility in any discourse with others who disagree with political perspectives.
