Those who would like to play a fun and friendly game of Texas Hold ‘Em for a $5 buy-in can play with the Tournament Poker Club on Aug. 15 in Clubhouse 6. Regular tournaments are on the first three Saturdays of every month and start with coffee, treats and registration at 10 a.m. Cards are in the air at 10:30. There is no late seating.

On Aug. 1, the club had a great turnout for the first game of the month. As usual, there was a lot of excitement and some disappointment but as the saying goes: “That’s poker!” Every week there are special prizes for particular hands. The week’s high hand winners were Mary Holder (Q-8 hearts), Earick Ward (10-10-10-10-6) and Patricia Hallock (7-7-7-7-K). Rolando Ramirez won a prize for playing and winning with the promo hand of 8-4.

As the winners of their original table, the final table players were: Eric Holdaway, first place; Earick Ward, second; Wayne Casper, third; Debbie Casper, fourth; Wendy Wu, fifth; Guta Basner, sixth; Patricia Hallock, seventh; and Harold Morehead, eighth. Play continued at the final table until Holdaway and Ward were head’s up. In the final hand of the match, Holdaway was holding K-2 clubs and Ward had ace hearts and 8 diamonds. The flop came 2-8-9, which gave Holdaway a pair of deuces. Holding two cards higher than those on the flop, Ward went all in. Holdaway called and got another 2 on the turn. The river, a 4, was no help to either player and gave Holdaway the win with a pair of deuces.

Holdaway has lived in Leisure World and been a member of the club for three years. This was his second final table win. Holdaway is the president of the LW Orchestra and a member of the Velvetones dance band, where he plays the trumpet. He also enjoys playing pickleball and bicycling.
