winter, the jet stream over the north Pacific Ocean tends to shift southward, bringing the storm track over the southern tier of the U.S., thus the wet and warm weather, according to NOAA.

An extended mosquito season creates risk for seniors and people with chronic health conditions, who are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.

Symptoms may include fever, body aches, rash, nausea, vomiting and headaches. However, most people infected do not experience symptoms.

Mosquito samples collected in Leisure World from July 18-29 tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the OC Vector Control District.

During mosquito season, the flood channel that runs along Golden Rain Road is treated with larvicide every 10-14 days.

If a heavy infestation is detected at any point, the agency will use truck-mounted foggers spraying adulticide to combat active transmission of West Nile virus. The public is notified ahead of spraying.

To prevent mosquito bites: • Dump and drain containers holding water frequently.

• Clean and scrub bird baths and pet water bowls.

• Wear repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Repellents are available at the GRF Purchasing Office, located in the Maintenance Yard.

• Close all unscreened doors and windows; repair broken or damaged screens.

• Wear light-colored, loose fitting, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants while outside at dawn and dusk.
