Terry Watson wins the last tournament of July

TOURNAMENT POKER CLUB

Those who would like to play a fun and friendly game of Texas Hold ‘Em for a $5 buy-in can play with the Tournament Poker Club on Saturday, Aug. 1. Regular tournaments are on the first three Saturdays of every month and start with coffee, treats and registration at 10 a.m. Cards are in the air at 10:30. There is no late seating.

July 18 marked the club’s last game for the month with a great turnout. Playing cards was a good way to beat the heat and enjoy time with friends. Every week there are special prizes for particular hands. The week’s high hand winners were Young Cho (9-9-9-9-4), Katie Hamilton (7-7-7-7-Q), and Doug Wolfe (3-3-3-3-K). Donna Hernandez won the prize for playing and winning with the promo hand of 10-2.

Play at all of the tables continued until there was one winner at each table. The final table players and how they finished in the tournament were: Terry Watson, first place; Linda Stone, second; Steve Edrich, third; George Casto, fourth; Glen Isom, fifth; Bob Konier, sixth; Frank Sablan, seventh; Rick Enge, eighth; and Doug Wolfe, ninth.

Play continued at the final table until Watson and Stone were heads up. At the start of the match, Stone was holding a slight lead with 4 of diamonds and ace of hearts. Watson was not far behind with a king of clubs and 10 of diamonds. With her ace in hand, Stone went all in before the flop and Watson called. The flop came 10 of spades, 2 of hearts and 9 of hearts, giving Stone three hearts, and Watson a pair of tens. The turn was 8 of spades, no help for either player. The river was a jack of spades, giving Watson the win with a pair of tens. Many club members stayed to watch two seasoned players strategize until the very end of the match.

Watson has lived in Leisure World for two years and been a member of the club for one year. This was his seventh time at the final table and his first win. Besides poker, Watson is a member of the Photo Arts Club. He enjoys taking Leisure World supported bus trips to plays and other events. He also enjoys magic, fishing, lots of reading, and loving and taking care of his dog.
