Donate gently used items to the Salvation Army June 13
GOLDEN AGE FOUNDATION EVENTS
The Golden Age Foundation (GAF) will host a 90-minute multicultural festival in the Amphitheater on July 18 at 7:30 p.m. to showcase different cultures in Leisure World.
The Cowboy Dance Team was formed specifically for this event and will not continue afterward.
Cowboy line dancing grew out of 19th century European and American folk dances, evolved through mid-20th century novelty dances, and exploded in popularity with the rise of country western music in the 1970-1990s.
Country western line dancing is a style of dance performed in boots, jeans and hats, often in honkytonks and country bars. While line dancing today spans many genres, its strongest cultural association remains with American cowboy culture.
The group will perform to multiple songs, including the “Cupid Shuffle,” a slower line dance that actually sings out the steps. “Cupid Shuffle” is a song by Cupid from his 2007 studio album “Time for a Change.” The group will also perform a LW favorite, “Elvira” electric slide dance to the song “Elvira” by the Oakridge Boys.
••• GAF Board Meeting May 27 The GAF Board will meet on Wednesday, May 27, at 2 p.m. in Clubhouse 3, room 9. All members are welcome to observe. This is a great opportunity to catch up on the latest news and get a preview of upcoming projects.
The GAF Board meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month, unless otherwise specified.
••• Salvation Army Donation Event June 13 Residents can donate gently used goods to the Salvation Army during the GAF’s donation drive in the Amphitheater parking lot on Saturday, June 13, from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
In addition to the donation drive providing a convenient place to drop off donations, the program also saves shareholders money by cutting down on expensive haul-away costs for items that were previously disposed of at the 1.8-Acre site. The collection bags will be put out two weeks before the collection date at the LW Weekly office. Collection bags will no longer be available in clubhouses.
The Salvation Army accepts donations of clean, gently used household items including clothing, bedding, kitchenware, small appliances, electronics, toys, sporting goods, books, art, home decor, and small-tomedium furniture.
This free and accessible event is one of the many programs the GAF runs to help shareholders, other programs include the hospitality center, yearly income tax filing, document shredding, mobility aid loans, battery and e-waste recycling, and more.
