GOLDEN AGE FOUNDATION EVENTS

The Golden Age Foundation (GAF) will host a multicultural festival in the Amphitheater on July 18 at 7:30 p.m. to showcase different cultures in Leisure World.

Hula is a dance that utilizes slow, graceful and low-impact movements to tell stories, often paired with chants or songs. Hawaiians used hula to pass down the history, mythology and stories of the Hawaiian people. The tradition went underground due to suppression by Protestant missionaries and a royal ban in the 1830s. It wasn’t until the 1870s, during the Hawaiian Renaissance, that hula saw a revival.

The “Second Hawaiian Renaissance,” took place in the 1970s when Hui O Hula instructor and LW resident Jojo Weingart, arrived in Hawaii. She embraced the aloha lifestyle, a philosophy that encourages a deep sense of love, respect, compassion, kindness and harmony within oneself, others and the natural environment. She then brought that aloha to Leisure World in 2004, when she founded Hui O Hula.

At the GAF-sponsored multicultural performance, Hui O Hula dancers will perform three hulas: the upbeat “Haleiwa Hula,” where dancers bring to life the song about carefree times on the North Shore“Up in Haleiwa at the Sugar Bar, we danced to music underneath the stars; by the old plantation in Wailua Town; Mokuleia is where we fool around”; the “Green Rose Hula” is about the admiration for a woman who is described in the song as a rare, fragrant green rose; and the “Holoholo Kaa” is an old Hawaiian song about going for a joy ride.

GAF is excited for the Hui O Hula to be a part of the 90-minute performance alongside five other groups.
