LW Men’s Golf League
Fourteen golfers of the LW Men’s League met at the River View Golf Course in Santa Ana on April 13. The weather was overcast and cold with a slight wind. It rained intermittently for two hours and then on the 17th and 18th holes it poured for 10 minutes, effectively halting play. As the players were heading to the 19th hole (also known as the bar) the sun suddenly came out, and it warmed up.
River View is a 5,600-yard par 70 course with the Santa Ana River running down the middle of the course, forcing the golfers to hit across the riverbed seven times, and also has dramatic elevation changes throughout. The riverbed was quite full and flowing quickly undoubtedly due to the weekend’s heavy rains inland. The course was in good shape, and 11 of the 14 golfers shot net under par with several very good scores.
There were a league record 16 birdies: three by Jim Goltra, Clay Fisher and Jae Choi; two by Chris Lankford and Seon Kim; and one each by Sam Choi, Steve Earl and Bruno Santillo. Closest to the pin on the 140-yard par 3 second hole was Sam Choi, and on the 100-yard ninth hole was Seon Kim. Goltra had fewest putts for the A flight, and Tom Ross had fewest in the B.
Net score equals gross minus handicap A flight winners: Sam Choi, 5 under, first place; Goltra, Seon Kim and Fisher, 4 under, second; Lankford and Santillo, 3 under, third; Jae Choi, 2 under, fourth; Dave LaCascia, 1 under, fifth; Larry Hillhouse, Earl, and Fujio Norihiro, sixth.
B flight winners: Won Park, 5 under, first place; Ross, 3 under, second; Randy Massaro, 1 under, third.
The league plays every Monday at four local courses. Advance reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Holes-inone and eagles are generously rewarded.
Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
