Understanding shingles: causes, symptoms and treatments Understanding shingles: causes, symptoms and treatments

Shingles (Herpes Zoster) is a viral infection caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, usually in childhood, the virus remains dormant and can reactivate later in life.

Shingles most commonly affects people over the age of 60 and those with compromised immune system. Once reactivated, it causes inflammation, nerve pain and a blistering rash. Symptoms include:

• Burning, stabbing, or electric- like nerve pain

• Tingling or numbness

• Red rash in a band-like pattern

• Clusters of fluid-filled blisters Blisters typically crust over and heal within two to three weeks. However, up to 30 percent of older adults develop persistent nerve pain after the rash resolves, which can last for months.

Antiviral medications are most effective in shingles’ treatment and promote faster healing. Pain management may include opioid medications, antidepressants, and nerve blocks in severe cases. Acupuncture and herbal medicine may help reduce inflammation, support immune function, and relieve nerve pain.

Shingles’ possible complications may include secondary bacterial skin infection, persistent nerve pain, vision problems, meningitis or encephalitis, and disseminated infection in immunocompromised patients.
