Sign up for the LW emergency preparedness practice drill on May 7
For the past six years the Emergency Preparedness Boots on Ground group has participated in two drills per year whereby each of the 10 club volunteers listed below gathered in designated locations within Leisure World and called in on a specific channel to validate clear radio communication.
The training will be held differently on May 7. The event will be held from 10 a.m.-noon in Clubhouse 3, Room 2, for Drill 1. Ten tables will be set up for an exercise to teach more volunteers the process, procedures, roles and responsibilities as well as allow opportunities for those who want to help but are limited in physical movement (roles as scribes in place are needed).
Volunteers are needed for the following groups: 1. Bikes: to transport potential water, handwritten messages or reports, and medical supplies.
2. LW CERT: members are asked to bring backpacks for the exercise.
3. Clergy: current or retired are welcome. 4. Drone owners/operators 5. Emergency Operation Center: those within operations, planning, logistics, finance and public information officers.
6. Heavy Equipment operators: current or retired are welcome. 7. Paws, Beaks and Claws Club: pet care 8. Ham or GMRS licensed Radio operators 9. Golf cart drivers: transport water, food, medical supplies and CERT volunteers.
10. First responders: current or retired medical doctors, therapists, nurses, or specialists.
During the event, residents will learn about the roles and responsibilities of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and go over a scenario to help train them for problem solving in a real emergency. Volunteers will then learn and review the standard forms to record for Hands and Feet on Ground observations and radio communications. There will be time for questions at the end of the event, followed by a quick survey. The group will distribute forms, map instructions, procedures, and slides at the meeting.
The LW Emergency Preparedness group hopes that by the end of this event, residents will gain understanding of the emergency operation center roles and responsibilities that are used for the city, county and state as well as Leisure World; learn how to fill out the standard forms and reports; and to know the gathering places to organize and to help.
