The Leisure World Orchestra, under the baton of Linda DeRungs, will hold a mid-winter concert on March 7 at 1 p.m. in Clubhouse 2. This marks the first time the 52-member orchestra will hold a third formal concert in its season.

Among the concert’s featured works are two selections by Rimsky-Korsakov, as well as by Bach, Telemann, Max Bruch, and a jazzy piece inspired by Rachmaninoff.

This concert’s concerto, the “Kol Nidrei” by Bruch, was inspired by the traditional Ashkenazi Yom Kippur invocation, and will be performed by solo cellist Hank Taylor. He is a recent graduate of the University of Indiana’s School of Music. His grandmother, Margie Masterson, will be playing in the orchestra’s cello section behind him.

The program has a signifi cant dance flavor and there will be a delightful sampling of American song standards.

Soloists include Leisure World resident Brian Tivnan on baritone for two ‘60s Broadway hits; Mark Fronke on clarinet for “Promenade” from one of Gershwin’s last musicals; and violinist Judy Quon on “Themes from Scheherazade,” Rimsky-Korsakov’s evocation of “One Thousand and One Nights.”

Four of the orchestra’s violinists will perform a 17th-century chamber work. A a brass quintet organized by the orchestra’s horn player, Cynthia Trostler, will present three varied works that include a movement from Bach’s “Art of the Fugue.”

All are welcome.
