Celebrate Women’s History March 1
LW HUMANIST ASSOCIATION
The Leisure World Humanist Association will meet on Sunday, March 1, in Clubhouse 3, Room 1, at 10:30 a.m.
March is Women’s History Month. Appropriately, Sunday’s talk by member Rachael Lehmberg will celebrate the many current and historical contributions of women to humanism. The talk will feature pictures and stories of the brave, farsighted women who struggled against the misogyny and repression of their day. Unfortunately, some of these regressive predispositions have reemerged in the culture today. The LW Humanist Association believes it is important to learn about and understand the history and beliefs of these progressive women.
The roots of humanism extend back for centuries. Although the thoughts and contributions of women toward human progress were marginalized and suppressed for most of that time, it is fortunate that written records have been preserved.
Raised in an atheist, politically liberal family, Lehmberg has been actively involved in social justice and other progressive issues for decades. In 1965, with the Viet Nam War heating up, Lehmberg participated in numerous anti-war protests while earning undergraduate and graduate degrees. She taught at community colleges in Arizona, California and Hawaii as well as several grades of elementary school. Today she is an active member of the LW Democratic Club.
