Next LW Men’s Golf Club tournament is Feb. 11

A hazy sun and cold weather greeted 49 players of the LW Men’s Golf Club on Jan. 28 at the Turtle Lake Golf Course. Each man competed for best net scores (gross score minus handicap), plus four circle holes (shots within a 5-foot radius rewarded), and two closest to the pin challenges.

It was initially windless but with heavy dampness due to overnight watering. Several areas in front of the elevated greens remained muddy and some fairways were soggy with several water bubbles caused by leaky sprinkler heads. Later in the morning, the sun came out in full, and the dampness eased up a bit.

The dampness and cold weather didn’t seem to bother the players as 31 of the 49 men scored net at or under par, as well as produced 69 birdies and 12 circle holes. Closest to the pin on hole No. 8 was Paul Shellenberger and on No. 17 it was Bob Barnum. Average net score for the round was 53.8 or just two tenths under par compared to 57.5 for the last tournament.

Low net score for the round was Fujio Norihiro at 6 under 48, followed by James Farr and Young Lee at 5 under 49, and a number of golfers at 50. John Kolthoff and Bill Lyons shared low gross score of the round at 2 under 52, followed by three others at even par 54.

A flight winners (handicaps of 0-6): Norihiro, first place; Dong On Kim, second; Pat Paternoster, Kolthoff, Thomas Kim, Kevin Childress, Bob Johnston and Lyons, third.

B flight winners (handicaps of 7-13): Farr and Young Lee, first place; Richard Yokomi, Jae H. Lee and Steve Walker, second; Jonn Sup Yoon, Ron Steele, Bruce Bowles and Jun Um, third; John Rudosky, fourth; Kevin Lindstedt and Won G. Park, fifth.

C flight (handicaps of 1418): Steve Kang, first place; Mark Tal, second; Noe Alcaraz, third; James Choi and Dennis Anctil, fourth; Dennis Jensen and Bob Boyle, fifth.

With golfers taking responsibility for fixing their divots and ball marks, the fairways, tees and greens look better and better. The club thanks everyone for seeding the tees and raking sand traps.
