Flyers without REAL ID required to pay $45 fee

Flyers traveling without a REAL ID will be required to pay a $45 fee for identity verification through TSA ConfirmID. The fee was implemented Feb. 1.

Flyers who require identity verification may experience delays and additional screening. To limit delays, people can pay for the verification online before they arrive at the airport at www.tsa.gov/tsaconfirm-id.

Not all California driver’s licenses are federally compliant REAL IDs. Check the top right hand edge of the ID: if it states “Federal Limits Apply,” then it is not REAL ID compliant.

Flyers can use the following as a REAL ID: passport or passport card; permanent resident card; U.S. Department of Defense ID, among others.

REAL IDs are issued through the Department of Motor Vehicles. The nearest DMV office is located at 13700 Hoover St., Westminster, CA, 92683, 7.3 miles from Leisure World.

To get a REAL ID, the applicant must provide one proof of identity document and two different, printed documents showing his or her mailing address. For a list of qualifying documents, visit https://www.dmv.ca.gov/ and search “REAL ID Checklist.”
