At the tournament on Jan. 10, 58 players came ready to play. High hand winners were Terry Watson (Queen high straight flush), Harry Nichols (9-9-9-9-A) and Joe Guglielmo (A-A-A-6-6). Doug Wolfe won a prize for playing and winning with the promo hand of 9-4.
As the winners of their original table, the final table players were: Guta Basner, first place; Jae Jun, second; Tom Pappas, third; Barry Brideau, fourth; Cheryl Enge, fifth; Doug Wolfe, sixth; Terry Watson, seventh; Scott Johnson, eighth; and Shelly Yu, ninth.
Play continued at the final table until Basner and Jun were head’s up. In the final hand of the match, Basner was holding K-J spades and Jun had ace of spades and a King of hearts. The flop came Qc, 7h, 6h giving both players several options. Jun went all in and was called by Basner. The turn was a Qh, giving Basner three queens and Jun a flush draw. The river was a Jack of hearts, which gave Jun a flush, but gave Basner the win with a full house.
Basner has lived in Leisure World for 12 years and been a member of the poker club for nine years. This was her 14th final table win. Basner is a member of many poker groups as well as billiards and pickleball. She is also an active member of Leisure World by serving on the board of her Mutual. Solving puzzles like Sudoku and jigsaws are other activities that she enjoys.
