LW Men’s Golf League
The LW Men’s Golf League has not played since before Christmas due to rain, extremely wet course conditions and the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, when tee times become very expensive.
It was a beautiful but cool morning that greeted 20 golfers on Jan. 12 at the 5,600-yard par 71 Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach. By midround it was brilliant sun, in the 70s, and layers were being shed. This was a nice change from the foggy and wet conditions encountered over the past few months. Meadowlark suffers badly after a heavy rain. Many muddy spots and pools of water frequented the course, giving the golfers fits trying to find decent places to drop balls that landed in the yuck.
Fortunately, greens were in good shape and consistent. With the difficult conditions, six of the 20 players shot net at or under par. There were eight birdies—two by Jim Goltra and Kyle Van, and one each by Dom Bautista, Larry Hillhouse, Seon Kim and Clay Fisher.
Closest to the pin on the 140yard par 3 seventh hole was Scott Slade, and Goltra was closest on the 150-yard 16th hole. Goltra also had fewest putts for the A flight, and Bob Munn had fewest in the B.
Net score equal gross minus handicap.
A flight winners: Goltra and Kim, 4 under, first place; Van, 3 under par, second; Hillhouse and Dave LaCascia, 2 under, third; Jae Choi, fourth; Fisher, fifth; Gary Stivers, Fujio Norihiro and Sam Choi, sixth.
B flight winners: Randy Massaro and Won Park, even par, first place; Bautista, Bruno Santillo and Sergio Borbon, second; Slade, third; Mike Jimenez, fourth; Tom Ross and Munn, fifth; Gene Vesely, sixth.
The Men’s Golf League plays every Monday at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. These courses are always quite full, so advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
There is a prize pool for each round, which players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (2 under par) are also rewarded.
Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
