LW Pool Club tournament coming Jan. 24 to CH 2

The LW Pool Club held its annual invitational 3, 6, 9 tournament on Dec. 27 in Clubhouse 2. This is the only tournament where members invite friends from outside Leisure World to play. It is also the only tournament where there are three people on a team.

The tournament was dedicated to the memory of George Gordon, who was a longtime member of the club and a regular at league play and tournaments. He will be missed.

Eight teams had three players and four teams had only two. Shots were alternated to avoid having a good player run all the balls. In the game 3,6,9, the three ball counts for one point, the six counts for two points, and the nine counts for three points. A team can score anywhere from zero to six points in a game, and every team plays seven rounds against a different opponent.

After the first three rounds, John Burns and his partner Steve Manzick led with 14 points. They made the three, six and nine in both the first and third rounds. Dave Silva, Jeff Furlong and John Sharp were in second place with 11 points. After six rounds, Burns and Manzick were still in first with 27 points, but in the seventh and final round Silva, Furlong and Sharp made the three and nine ball for four points and a total of 29, while Burns and Manzick only made the six ball to tie for first with 29 points. John Barth, Cornell Sneekes and Susan Dotson came in third with 27 points.

To break the tie, the two teams played one game with the winner being the team that made the nine ball. In nine ball, players always have to shoot the lowest ball on the table, so that starts with the one ball. Silva shot the one into a cluster of balls and left Burns with a one nine combination in the right hand corner pocket. The nine was about a foot away from the pocket and the one was 6 inches away from the nine. Combination shots are never easy unless the balls are very close together. Burns made the combo on the nine to take first place for his team.

The next tournament will be on Jan. 24 at 1:30 p.m. in Clubhouse 2. It will be an eight ball doubles event.
