Hui O Hula: Hawaiian Dance Club
Hui O Hula offers hula dance lessons twice a week. Classes meet Tuesdays at 1 p.m. upstairs in Clubhouse 6, and Thursdays at 1 p.m., in the Optum Health Care Center Conference Room.
Hula dancing provides gentle fitness and improves balance, coordination and mental focus. The dancing is set to melodic Hawaiian music and shared in a relaxed atmosphere. All are welcome. For class information, call or text 562-338-1502.
In class, regular dancers learn at their own pace while newcomers are encouraged to learn and practice one step and one sway at a time. Current class subject is Holoholo Ka’a, a traditional hula celebrating the pleasure of cruising in a car—ka’a. Instructor Jojo Weingart’s choreography playfully mimics golf carts rolling over speed bumps, navigating sharp turns, and enjoying the breezy windowless ride and under the bright moonlight here in Leisure World. Dancers are almost ready to perform this cheerful number for the Rollin’ Thunder Golf Cart Club at its Jan. 9 dinner party.
Newer dancers are beginning to take on more responsibility, marking a positive new chapter for the club that honors experience while welcoming fresh energy.
