HOLIDAY DECOR

It’s that time of year when the Recreation Department reaches out to all clubs to adopt a tree in one of the clubhouses to trim for the annual Christmas Tree Decorating contest.

This year’s theme is “Christmas Around the World,” where the clubs chosen to compete deck out their tree to reflect either a particular country or culture or an international theme. GRF directors Susan Hopewell, Mutual 6; Kathryn Jones, Mutual 9; Carol Levine, Mutual 10; and Teri Nugent, Mutual 2 served as judges. The winners were:

• Clubhouse 1: Clay Crafters—Most Effort: This ceramics club created every ornament in their studio involving many hours of time and exceptional talent.

• Clubhouse 2: Filipino Association of Leisure World—Judge’s Choice: A highly creative tree that sports Filipino cultural ornaments collected by club president Anastasia Wayman over a lifetime and decorated by several members.

• Clubhouse 3: Korean American Association—Most Unique:

• Clubhouse 4: Lapidary and Jewelry Club—Most Beautiful: A truly international interpretation of the theme that includes many handmade ornaments crafted by the club members executed in classic red, white and green.

• Clubhouse 6: Hui O’ Hula Club—Best Execution: A tree loaded with aloha spirit as well international flavor, topped with flags from nations of the world.

“This was such a difficult decision”, Nugent said, “Every tree could have won in every category. All of the effort and workmanship was exceptional this year. The clubs poured their hearts and talents into every entry and it shows.”

Each club will be awarded gift cards for their participation.

“Stop by the clubhouses and savor the talents of your neighbors. It’s sure to put you in the holiday spirit and perhaps inspire you to join one of these talented clubs,” added GRF Recreation Manager Kathy Thayer. “2025 is going to be hard to beat.”
