With only one question on the ballot on California’s special election ballot for Prop. 50, LW Democrats fought hard with canvassing, postcarding, button making, operating the hospitality booth, and being available to explain why the passage of Prop 50 was important. It was an outstanding victory.

Special shout-out to Kathy Moran, who organized canvassers and kept it all in motion. Thanks also goes to the club’s volunteers.

The passage of Prop 50 is not the only exciting news for democrats. New Jersey elected its first female governor ever, Abigail Spanberger Virginia elected a female governor, Mikie Sherrill; and three Pennsylvania democratic justices, one woman and two men, won their retention elections. Zohran Mandani, a 33-year-old assemblymember and Democratic Socialist, was elected mayor of New York City. Also, Kansas, Missouri and Mississippi saw significant changes and flipped from red to blue in several areas.

Voter ID seems to be a reoccurring issue for Republicans in California. Democrats contend that Voter ID is not really needed in California because there is no documented voter fraud, and California’s mail-in voting has been safe and secure for several prior election cycles. Residents of Leisure World hold their own “organic” demonstrations each Saturday at the globe from 2-3 p.m. There are also Freedom Rallies every Sunday at the Irvine City Hall from 2-4 p.m.

The Democratic Club membership meetings are held the fourth Wednesday each month in Clubhouse 3, Room 2, at 1:30 p.m. People can come early and bring a lunch; light snacks are served.

Due to the holidays, there are some changes to the membership meeting timetable. The regularly scheduled meeting for Nov. 26, has been moved to the following week which is Dec. 3. The December membership meeting is canceled.

During November, the Democratic Club’s Hospitality Booth will be open every Tuesday and the third Thursdays from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. next to Clubhouse 6. People are welcome to stop by and visit with likeminded individuals, register to vote, change address, or change party affiliation. Volunteers are available to assist and answer questions.
