Hui O Hula Holiday Performances Hui O Hula Holiday Performances

Hui O Hula, the LW Hawaiian dance club, meets twice a week to learn and practice traditional Hawaiian dance. Lessons are taught by Jojo Weingart. Both classes start around 1 p.m. On Tuesdays the group meets in the Clubhouse 6 Mirror Room, and on Thursdays at Veterans Plaza. All are welcome.

The club wishes a happy birthday to Bruce Zisterer, who has won awards in chrysanthemum competitions such as the 2024 National Show. Not everyone can say they have a chrysanthemum named after them, but Zisterer can. In class, he is always ready to dance “God Bless America,” and is determined to master the art of ipu/gourd.

The current class subject is “Christmas In The Isle Again.” This dance uses three traditional implements: the ipu (gourd drum), the pū’ili (split bamboo rhythm sticks), and the ‘uli‘uli (feathered rattles). Each implement helps by adding sound, movement and energy to this Christmas dance.

For nearly two decades, Hui O Hula dancers have volunteered to entertain wherever needed—no stage too big, no living room too small —especially during the holiday season.

On Sunday, Nov. 23, at 9 a.m., the dancers will perform “The Prayer” accompanied by its musical director Dr. Vu Bingh and his musicians at Seal Beach Shepherd Church. The dancers will also perform at GRF’s Christmas Tree Lighting on Wednesday, Dec. 3. The dancers will start the program at 4 p.m.

For class information or to request a holiday performance, call or text 562-338-1502, or talk to any Hui O Hula member.
