The Harvest Festival at the newly configured Community Gardens was a happy success on Oct. 25. There were 200-300 people roaming through the gardens, exclaiming about the variety of vegetables growing. Now, we really have to raise the funds for the plant stand that was in the original plan. It would hold extra produce donated for the neighborhood of Leisure World to come and take free extra fresh food home.
Thanks to the sponsors of the event—SCAN, On-Site Home Sales, J & J Landscaping, Serenity Home Care and Primary Care Associates. And special thanks to the free sorbet from Scooter’s food truck.
The prizes and the drawing for a 55-inch television set was a special event for garden lookers and garden growers alike.
The Community Gardens were created again to continue a tradition that started over 50 years ago in 1973. The Oct. 28 event showed how much members still love to garden and raise vegetables to eat. The Golden Age Foundation purchased the wheelbarrows and wagons that all gardeners use to maintain their plots. It takes a village. Please come to the 1.8 acres to visit the Community Gardens, for a change of place and pace. VegTrugs might be available to lease for handicapped access gardeners. There were a few plots still open for residents to lease through the Recreation Department. And, thanks again to Recreation staff for all the set up and take down of a lovely event.
