Fund will assist those on SNAP
LEISURE WORLD CARES FUND
The Leisure World Cares Fund charity is stepping up to help residents who depend on the monthly federal food aid known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The CalFresh Program, federally known as the SNAP, issues monthly electronic benefits that can be used to buy most foods at many food stores. As of Oct. 31, the federal government had not provided funding for November and has stated it would not tap into contingency funds. The State of California may provide some relief, but only through aid to food banks.
SNAP recipients are used to receiving cash benefits that they can use to buy authorized items that fit their individual needs. That is where the Leisure World Cares Fund Board decided to step in and help. The fund’s focus is to provide small subsidies to HOA fees to those who need help. However, due to the extraordinary circumstances being faced by SNAP recipients in Leisure World during November, the board chose to temporarily pivot and use some of the existing donations to replace some of the SNAP funding. Only the funds donated by one anonymous donor will be used for this purpose. All other donated funds will be used in support of the fund’s mission of providing housing security in Leisure World. The fund is offering to replace up to $100 of authorized SNAP benefits. To receive the benefit, the SNAP recipient will need to contact the Leisure World Cares Fund by email or phone and provide documentation of the SNAP benefits.
