Fifty golfers complete shotgun scramble on Oct. 27
Fifty golfers from the Leisure World men’s and women’s golf leagues played in a special shotgun scramble tournament on Oct. 27 at the par 54 Turtle Lake Golf Course. Nine teams of five players teed off at 8 a.m. with the goal to have the lowest gross score of the day. Additionally, there were contests for four circle holes and closest to the pin on hole No. 2.
The course remained quite wet for most of the round. However, it did not affect scoring, with the lowest gross score being 11 under par, followed by two teams at 10 under, and two teams at nine under.
The competition was intense but remained friendly throughout, and there was tremendous support between team members. Considering the average playing conditions, it was surprising that each team achieved a well-below-par score. Closest to the pin on the second hole for the men was John Kolthoff, and Sophia Kim for the women. A special raffle was held for a $50 gift card to Roger Dunn that was won by Rolando Ramirez. There were eight circle hole winners. Additionally, golfers scored a total of 67 birdies out of the 162 holes played.
Winners: Bill Lyons (Captain), Tom Owens, Ron Jackson, John Burns, 11 under par 44, first place; Ralph Koizumi (Captain), Walter Kim, Janice Turner, Ben Benjamins, Marilyn Hewitt, and John Kolthoff (Captain), Young Lee, Hae Lee, Dennis Jensen, and Kyung Ju, 10 under 44, second; Bob Barnum (Captain), Ron Steele, Cece Feltman, Paul Shellenberger, Joann Lim and Mike Mayfield (Captain), Sophia Kim, Jon Russell, Steve Walker, Dave Winn; 9 under 45, third; Pat Paternoster (Captain), Bonnie Kilmer, Mark Tal, Thomas Kim, Steve Kang and Bob Turner (Captain), Jun Um, Noe Alcarez, Susie Kim, 9 under 45, fourth.
Special thanks to Ron Steele for setting up the event and being the tournament director; to Bob Turner for bringing the doughnuts; and Daniel Mahoney and Steve Walker for coffee setup and clean-up. Appreciation to starter Kyu for announcing the tournament, and the maintenance team for their usual great job in getting the course ready for play.
