Skimming scam and how to avoid it
Each year, skimming costs financial institutions and consumers more than $1 billion. Skimming occurs when devices illegally installed on or inside ATMs, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, or fuel pumps capture card data and record cardholders PIN entries. Pinhole cameras may also be installed in or around ATMs to record a customer’s PIN entry. In some cases, keylogging keypad overlays are used to record PINs (customer’s keystrokes).
Criminals may also capture EBT card data through a POS skimming device at any market or a convenience store, as well as Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) card.
Below are some tips to protect yourself from skimming.
• Whenpullinggas, chooseafuelpumpthatisclosertothestore and in direct view of the attendant, or pay inside.
• Runadebitcardasacreditcard, ifpossible, orcoverthekeypad when entering a PIN. Examine the keyboard for any inconsistencies in coloring, material or shape.
• When using a card reader, tap the card instead of swiping or inserting it. Tap-to-pay transactions are more secure.
• Inspect ATMs, Point of Sale (POS) terminals, and other card readers before using. Look for anything loose, crooked, damaged, or scratched.
• If possible, use ATMs in a well-lit, indoor location, and be especially alert for skimming devices in tourist areas.
• Avoid using a debit card with linked accounts. Use a credit card instead.
• Routinely monitor your credit card, bank or other benefits accounts to identify any unauthorized transactions.
• Implement a multi-factor authentication of transactions to reduce the risk of financial losses.
• If you receive a call, text, or email asking for card information, contact the relevant state benefits agency to verify the authenticity of the message(s), and/or verify the status of the EBT account and current funds using a known balance inquiry line or website, or the relevant mobile application.
• Never provide a card information or a PIN when somebody asks for it through call, text or email.
• Always use a strong PIN.
• In case of suspicious activity, temporarily block or freeze your debit/credit or EBT card through the app on your phone, and/ or call your financial institution to report a fraud.
