Guys and Gals Tournament
The Men's Golf Club No vember General meeting is on Nov. 5. At this meeting there will be discussions about club by-laws, the annual Christmas party, and deliberations and nominations for all current board member positions including membership chairman.
A damp but clear morning greeted the golfers of the Guys and Gals Tournament on Oct. 15. Heavy overnight rains made for poor course conditions.
Twenty-one teams of one man and one woman teed off at the 7:30 a.m. start time at the Turtle Lake Golf Course. Each team competed for best net scores (gross score minus handicap), plus four circle holes (shots within a 5-foot radius rewarded), and two closest to the pin challenges.
The wet greens were very soft, leading to deep gouges from balls that landed off the tee. This added to damages caused by previously poorly fixed or unrepaired ball marks. Golf shoes with removable plastic spikes also damaged the greens.
Eleven of the 21 teams scored net at or below par, with only one team scoring gross below par. There were three circle hole winners—a record low—and 25 birdies—another record low. Average net scores for all teams was 53.9, or slightly less than 2 under par—one full stroke higher than last month’s 52.8. Clearly the weather and damp conditions played a part in the results.
Closest to the pin for the men on the par 3 eighth hole was John Kolthoff and on the 17th it was Gene Archambault; for the women it was Linda Herman and Sun Lee. Low net scores for the round were Steve and Connie Kang, 10 under 44; Ron Osgood and Laura Garcia, 8 under 46; Jae H. and Sun Lee, 6 under 48. The lowest gross score was carded by Mike Mayfield and Cece Feltman at 4 under 50.
Net score equals gross score minus handicap.
A flight winners (handicaps of 0-5): Mayfield and Feltman, first place; Bob and Janice Turner, second; Bruce Bowles and Linda Herman, third; Bob Barnum and Kyung Ju, fourth.
