West Nile virus detected in LW mosquito sample
VECTOR CONTROL
The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District (OC Vector) has confirmed mosquito samples infected with West Nile virus in Seal Beach.
Mosquitoes tested on Oct. 2 at two testing sites, one in Leisure World and one at the Naval Weapons Station, came back positive for West Nile virus.
Inspectors will be out in the area to check known sources of mosquito breeding and to try to identify any unknown sources, according to OC Vector.
If inspectors continue to detect positive mosquito samples, adult mosquito control may be conducted in the future. OC Vector uses physical, biological and chemical means to control mosquito populations and reduce transmission of disease to humans. These include larvicides that are applied to mosquito breeding sites and adulticides that kill mature mosquitos.
Residents are advised to take the following precautions:
• Wear repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
• Wear light-colored, loosefitting, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants while outside at dawn and dusk.
• Dump and drain containers holding standing water at least once a week.
• Clean and scrub bird baths and pet water bowls.
• Close all unscreened doors and windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering a home or space.
• Repair broken or damaged screens.
