Bookstore proceeds support LW Library, scholarships and more
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY

Patrons periodically inquire about what is done with the Friends of the Library Bookstore and boutique earnings. In answer to that question, large, regular checks are donated directly to the Leisure World Library to enhance its services. These donations are reported in the LW Weekly.
In addition, the Friends of the Library funds scholarships at local colleges to support students in library science programs. The Friends of the Library Board works closely with the colleges to award scholarships to promising and needy students as recommended by the colleges.
This year the Friends of the Library is pleased to announce that three students have been selected, all of whom will be attending California State University colleges.
Two of the recipients, Kate O’Neill and Keirsten Reta, are both accredited teachers who are returning to college for teacher librarian credentials. Both wrote excellent essays on why they seek this credential as further commitment to students’ literacy. O’Neill writes, “I have seen firsthand how powerful school libraries can be in cultivating and sustaining curiosity, supporting diverse learnings with literature and teaching research skills.”
Reta wrote, “Teacher librarians open windows for opportunities to support students with reading advisory, and information literacy”.
The third scholarship recipient is Angely Moreno, a recent graduate of El Moreno High School. Surrounded by books and resources of her local library, she has dedicated many hours of community service, including volunteering at public libraries and supporting school book fairs. She will further her dedication to lifelong learning at California State University Fullerton.
The Friends of the Library boutique half-price sale ends Saturday, Oct. 4.
