Hula dancers celebrate birthdays
HUI O HULA
September brings with it the late summer heat, and, among the dancers of Hui O Hula, it brings the birthdays of Lanny Chen and Kimberly Kim. Mutual 2 welcomed Chen three years ago, after a visit with her friend, fellow former China Airlines flight attendant Helen Wu, had her over for lunch one day. Chen sold her Gardena home, and moved into Leisure World, where she quickly made friends and became involved in Tai Chi classes, dances, potlucks and of course, hula.
“LW is a paradise, gathering most happy and long-living people. I’m honored to be one of them,” Chen said.
Mutual 1 welcomed Kim also just three years ago. She can be found at the golf course, or line dancing with Joyful Line Dance club. She has two daughters and is a faithful member of Hui O Hula.
Hui O Hula meets upstairs in Clubhouse 6 on Tuesdays, beginning at 1 p.m. On Thursdays, class is held at Veterans Plaza, unless the weather is not suitable, then the dancers will likely be found inside Clubhouse 3. Hula is traditionally danced barefoot, but, if shoes are necessary, wear soft-soled dance shoes or socks.
