Tournament Poker Club will not play Sept. 20 due to swap meet
Due to the GRF swap meet, there will be no Tournament Poker Club tournament on Saturday, Sept. 20. Sept. 27 is the fourth Saturday of the month and no tournament is scheduled. Regular tournaments are held on the first three Saturdays of every month and start with coffee/treats and registration at 10 a.m. Cards are in the air at 10:30. There is no late seating.
On Sept. 6, the club had a great turnout for its first game of the month. As usual, there was a lot of excitement and some disappointment, but as the saying goes: “That’s poker!” Every week there are special prizes for particular hands. The week’s high hand winners were Guta Basner (7-7-7-7-9), Lem Hall (KK- K-3-3) and Donna Hernandez (7-7-7-K-K). Nancy Jordan won a prize for playing and winning with the promo hand of 4-10.
As the winners of their original table, the final table players were: Kathy Elliott, first place; Ray Lim, second; Edwin Lucero, third; Wendy Wu, fourth; Guta Basner, fifth; Brent Covington, sixth; Linda Stone, seventh; and Nancy Floyd, eighth. Play continued at the final table until Elliott and Lim were head’s up. The final hand of the match was a close one. Elliott was holding A hearts and J diamonds, and Ray had A spades and 9 diamonds. The flop came 6-7-4. With two over cards, Elliott went all in. With another big hand, Lim called, which meant he was also all in. The turn was a Q hearts which didn’t help either player. The river card was another card which was irrelevant to both hands—10 diamonds. With the highest card and a bigger kicker in her hand, Elliott won the hand and the game.
Elliott has lived in Leisure World and has been a member of the club for 18 years. This was her second final table win. Elliott also runs the Dealer’s Choice Poker Club here in Leisure World, and she delivers the LW Weekly to 336 residents in Mutual 1.
The club congratulates all the winners.
