LW Men’s Golf League
Eight golfers of the Leisure World Men’s Golf League competed at the 5,800-yard par 71 River View Golf Course in Santa Ana on Aug. 29. The weather was very hot and humid at the 7:30 a.m. tee off time. The course was dry, and fairways, greens and most tee boxes were in good shape. The extremely warm and steamy conditions seemed to affect the flight and distance of approach shots as well as putting lengths and roll.
With decent playing conditions, and in spite of the heat, there were a number of great scores with six of the eight players shooting at or below net par. There were five birdies—one each by Gary Stivers, Dave LaCascia, Bruno Santillo, Sam Choi and Chris Lankford. Lankford was closest to the pin on the 140-yard par 3 second hole, and Jim Goltra was closest to the pin on the 100-yard par 3 ninth hole. Stivers had fewest putts for the round.
Winners (net score: gross minus handicap): Stivers and Lankford, 5 under 66, first place; LaCascia, Goltra and Clay Fisher, 4 under 67, second; Sam Choi, 1 under 70, third; Fujio Norihiro and Santillo, fourth.
The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. Advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles are generously rewarded.
Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
