Ham Radio FAQs

LW Amateur Radio Club members have a wealth of knowledge and they are happy to share it with the LW community. Below is a list of frequently asked questions by those curious about ham radios.

What is ham radio? Ham radio (nickname for amateur radio) is a method of radio communication for talking with others who have ham radios. Radio operators often refer to themselves as hams.

Can ham radio contribute to my emergency plan? A ham radio can be a lifeline, whether a person is helping others or the one in need of help. Many people participate in periodic nets, by practicing contacting each other by ham radio in an organized and regulated manner. Through this and other training, people learn how to communicate effectively and efficiently, to become familiar with the equipment and how to jump into action during a moment of crisis.

I can just use my cell phone, so what’s the difference? During an emergency, cell phone coverage might be limited or unavailable if power is off in your area. Cell towers can easily get overwhelmed during an emergency if many people are trying to get hold of loved ones or are seeking information.

How can I get my amateur radio license? For more information come to the monthly meeting held on the first Wednesday of each month in Clubhouse 3, Room 9, at 10 a.m., or call the Radio
