First Christian Church

First Christian Church of Leisure World teaches from God’s word the Holy Bible, verse by verse. It is a friendly church that welcomes all visitors to join in worship and explore God’s word together, “that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine,” Romans 1:12.

Pastor’s Message

In Romans 7, the apostle Paul continues the debate of what the Law of God was designed for, and if believers should be bound to it, and if it brings salvation. In Romans 7:7 Paul asks, “What shall we say then? Is the Law sin?” He asks this question after explaining that the true believers in Christ Jesus are dead to both sin and the law. If this is the case, the law must be sin, since it brings death.

Paul responds to this with an emphatic statement, “Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law.” The law brought people to the knowledge of sin (Romans 3:20).

Where does humanity get its moral compass from other than what God has written within his own conscience? As an example, Paul confesses that even he would not have known not to covet had he not known the commandment forbidding it.

As a modern day example, how do people know that they are speeding in a school zone at 30 mph? Because the law says, “School Zone Speed Limit 25 mph.”

The law is not bad, in fact it gives life to those who are in complete obedience to it. But that’s where the problem lies, mankind is not capable of fulfilling the whole law perfectly.

The law was not meant to save anyone. It was given to reveal sin as sin and to make clear our completely hopeless condition apart from Jesus Christ.

The law points people to Christ, the redeemer, the one that would free the world from the bondage from sin. Jesus did just that on the cross of Calvary for all that would believe in Him.
