Guys and Gals Tournament

A sunny and humid morning greeted the golfers of the Guys and Gals Tournament on Aug. 20. Thirty teams of one man and one woman, with varying golfing abilities, teed off starting at 7:30 a.m. at the 1,680-yard par 54 Turtle Lake Golf Course. Each team competed for best net scores (gross score minus handicap), plus four circle holes (shots within a 5-foot radius rewarded), and two closest to the pin challenges.

Initially the greens and fairways were very wet, but as the sun rose the wetness disappeared quickly. With excessive heat, the later matches were in full sun with, fortunately, a light breeze. On hot and humid days like this, care must be taken to hydrate well and be aware of heat related illness symptoms.

Twenty-four of the 30 teams scored net at or below par. There were 11 circle hole winners, with 47 birdies recorded. Overall average gross score for all 30 teams was 59.7, or nearly 6 strokes over par. Average net scores for all teams was 51.9 or just slightly under par.

Closest to the pin for the men on the par 3 eighth hole was Kevin Daeley, and on the 17th it was Dave LaCascia; for the women it was Jane Song and Neva Senske. Low net score for the round was Jae H. and Sun Lee at 12 under par 42, followed by John Rudosky and Jane Kors at 11 under 43. The lowest gross scores were carded by Bruce Bowles and Linda Herman, Mike Mayfield and Nancy Tye, Bill Lyons and Yasmin Merali, and Jae H. and Sun Lee at 3 under 51.

A flight winners (handicaps of 0-4): Bowles and Herman, Mayfield and Tye, first place; Lyons and Merali, second; Ron Steele and Cece Feltman, and Mark Rice and Kyung Ju, third; Bob and Janice Turner, fourth.

B flight winners (handicaps of 5-8): Walker and Thompson, first place; Kevin Lindstedt and Patty Littrell, second; Dennis McMonigle and Ann Tran, Young and Hae Lee, and Terry Thrift and Karen Mendon, third.

C flight winners (handicaps of 9-18): Jae H. and Sun Lee, first place; Rudosky and Kors, second; James Farr and Janell Herbert, and Scott Tuchfarber and Pam Krug, third; Kevin and Carmen Daeley, fourth; Bill Zurn and Neve Senske, and James and Grace Choi, fifth.

The next Guys and Gals Tournament will be on Sept. 17 and then every third and fifth Wednesday if there is one. The men’s tournament is played every second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Those who planned to play in any tournament and cannot should contact Scott Tuchfarber at 909-684-0426 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975 as soon as possible. Arrive 10-15 minutes prior to scheduled tee time and be ready to play.

There will be a LW Men’s Golf Club general meeting on Sept. 3 in Clubhouse 3, Room 1, at 9 a.m. Members must attend at least one meeting each year to play in tournaments and be eligible for payouts.
