LW Men’s Golf Club

An overcast and very humid morning greeted the players in the LW Men’s Golf Club’s Aug. 13 tournament. Sixty-one golfers teed off starting at 7:30 a.m. at the 16,80-yard par 54 Turtle Lake Golf Club. Each man competed for best net scores (gross score minus handicap), plus four circle holes (shots within a 5-foot radius rewarded), and two closest to the pin challenges.

The course was in great condition, with only a few impacted sprinkler heads in the fairways and some intrusion of weeds on two greens. This round the typical morning dampness was present, causing putts to check up earlier than expected. The sun made an appearance later in the round when it became quite warm, but there was no significant wind. Even with good conditions, only 14 of the 61 players scored net at or under par. There were 76 birdies and a record 15 circle holes.

Closest to the pin on No. 8 was Won Park, and on No. 17 it was Gene Archambault— both just over 2 feet away. Low net score for the round was club president Ron Steele at 8 under 46, followed by Kevin Linstedt and Kyo M. Soh at 7 under 47. Low gross for the tournament was Bob Barnum at 2 under 52, followed by Steele at 1 under 53, and three others at par.

Average net scores by for all players was 55.9 strokes or slightly less than 2 over par. Last month’s average was 56.1.
