Young Lee is putting champion
LW WOMEN'S GOLF CLUB
The first annual putting tournament of the LW Women’s Golf Club was held July 29, and from all the favorable comments and smiling faces, it seems like it was a rousing success.
Treasurer Vivian Ceballos came up with the idea. By the time she presented it to the board, she had already secured Gasper Monteer Realty Group as the sponsor. They generously donated the $100 prize money, as well as a giant fruit platter, muffins and other pastry items for the participants to enjoy.
Ceballos put together a committee of seven volunteers: Nancy Tye, Nancy Smith, Sue Yokomi, Sue Sloan, Susie Kim, Laura Garcia and Judi Ornoff. From the first meeting, Ceballos was very organized, thorough and inclusive. The group responded by bonding together and following through on the tasks they were assigned, following a detailed timeline. The planning for this event started early in the year and all the effort resulted in a well-run event.
The tournament was open to all men and women who belong to either the men’s or women’s Leisure World golf clubs. The 50 participants were divided into five groups, each led by a committee member. The putting took place on five of the golf course’s holes, and the groups rotated through each hole simultaneously. Each putter had three tries at getting the ball in, and if they didn’t succeed, got a score of four. Putting order was determined by a random drawing of numbered cards.
At the end of the five rounds, two people tied for the lowest score—a 10. Those two men, Mark Rice and Young Lee, had a “sudden death” putt-off. It took only one round for Young Lee to be crowned the champion, needing only two putts to get the ball in the hole.
The club hopes to have a second tournament next year.
