GOLF

Fifty golfers from the Leisure World men’s and women’s golf leagues played in a special shotgun scramble tournament on July 30 at the par 54 Turtle Lake Golf Course. Ten teams of five players teed off at 8 a.m. with the goal to have the lowest gross score of the day.

Special rules for the tournament were:

• Each team member teed off and then it was best ball until the ball went in the hole.

• Eachbestshotwasmarked, and every other player played from within 6 inches of that spot.

• Every team member used their drive off the tee three times for the first 15 holes.

• On the last three holes anyone’s drive could be used.

• All balls were played into the hole.

• Onlythebestscorewasentered on the scorecard.

The competition was intense but had tremendous support between team members and considerable friendly banter between teams. Considering the above average playing conditions, it was not surprising that each team achieved a wellbelow- par score. There were seven circle hole winners and 85 birdies, averaging over eight per team. Closest to the pin on the second and 11th holes respectively were Terry Thrift and Steve Kang for the men, and Sophia Kim and Pam Krug for the women.

Winners: Mike Mayfield (Capt.), Marv Jones, Nina De Rosa, Darry Holten, Dale Quinn, 10 under par 44, first place; Trai Nguyen (Capt.), Jon Russell, Janice Turner, Daniel Mahoney, Jun Um, 9 under 45, second. Five teams tied for third: Dave LaCascia (Capt.), Walt Kim, Mark Tal, Grace Choi, Dennis Jensen; Bob Turner (Capt.), James Choi, Ron Jackson, Paul Shellenberger, Marilyn Hewitt; Dong Kim (Capt.), John Rudosky, Pam Krug, Steve Kang, Judi Ornoff; John Kolthoff (Capt.) Dale Williamson, Terry Thrift, Joann Lim, Scott Tuchfarber; Pat Paternoster (Capt.), Steve Walker, Nancy Tye, Lee Broadbent, Kevin Lindstedt.

Special thanks to Ron Steele for setting up the event and being the tournament director; to Pat Paternoster for his help with handicapping and final rankings; to Bob Turner for bringing the donuts; and to Scott Tuchfarber and Steve Walker for coffee setup and clean-up. Appreciation to starter Kyu for announcing the tournament, and the maintenance team for their usual great job in getting the course ready for play.

The picnic that followed the tournament was well attended and participants were treated to burgers and hot dogs, salads, cold drinks, and Ding Dongs and Hostess cupcakes for dessert.
