Nonprofit seeks senior volunteers to talk about plastic with kids
ENVIRONMENT
Environmental nonprofit Algalita is looking for seniors to participate in an “Ask Your Elders” activity for kids on Aug. 4-8.
The nonprofit, which focuses on reducing plastic pollution, is hosting a six-week Ocean Action Leadership Camp with youth from Long Beach, Seal Beach and neighboring cities.
In week five, the Algalita is hosting a Solutions Fair at River’s End Park, located on First Street in Seal Beach, on Monday, Aug. 4, Wednesday, Aug. 6, and Friday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each day. The event will focus on addressing plastic pollution and decreasing waste.
Algalita is looking for seniors to participate in an “Ask Your Elders” activity where students can explore how peoples’ relationship with materials and waste has changed over time. Elders are needed to answer questions like:
• How did you pack a picnic before plastic became common?
• What kinds of things did your family reuse at home?
• How often did you buy clothes—and how did you mend them?
• What did store packaging look like then compared to now? Alongside the storytelling piece, there will be interactive stations, activities, and a chance to explore community-based environmental solutions together. Lunch will be provided.
The nonprofit is looking for about five elders to join the group for each of the three days of camp. For more information, or to sign up, email emily@algalita.org.
Algalita's Solutions Fair will be held at River's End Park in Seal Beach.
