Tournament Poker Club to play on Saturday, Aug. 2

Those who would like to play a fun and friendly game of Texas Hold ‘Em for a $5 buy-in should make plans to join the Tournament Poker Club on Saturday, Aug. 2. Regular tournaments are held on the first three Saturdays of every month and start with coffee/ treats and registration at 10 a.m. Cards are in the air at 10:30. There is no late seating.

At the tournament on July 12, 64 players had a great time. As usual, there was a lot of excitement and some disappointment but as the saying goes: “That’s poker!” Every week there are special prizes for particular hands. High hand winners were Donna Hernandez (A-A-A-AK) and Patrick Conlon (10-1010-10-K). Steve Edrich won a prize for playing and winning with the promo hand of 7-2.

As the winners of their original table, the final table players were: Lonnie Ton, first place; Anne Wilkerson, second; Mike Gass, third; Lee Pfeifer, fourth; Marvin Rolnick, fifth; Joyce Smith, sixth; Katherine Powell, seventh; and Treva Carnes, eighth.

Play continued at the final table until Ton and Wilkerson were heads up. It was great to have six women out of the eight players at the final table—and even better to have two of the best of those in the final heads up match. In the final hand, Ton was holding 6-8 and Wilkerson had Q-6. The flop came K-8-6, giving Ton a pair of 6s. She made a large bet and was called by Wilkerson, who had to give up her remaining chips to make the call. Neither the turn card, a J nor the 3 on the river was any help for Wilkerson, and Ton won the match with her 6s.

Ton has lived in Leisure World for 11 years and has been a member of the poker club for one year. This was her second final table win. Ton plays in several poker groups and helps out each group whenever she is needed. Besides playing poker, she loves to swim.
