“In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army, but David remained in Jerusalem” 2 Samuel 11:1.
This verse exhorts believers to consider the position that God demands and to not be out of alignment with it. Those familiar with this story in 2 Samuel know that as king, David’s responsibility was to be with his men, and as a result of being out of position, he fell into temptation that led to his sinning and the terrible consequences that came about as a result.
Some commentators say that remaining in Jerusalem left David in a complacent mood that led to idleness. This is when people are most vulnerable to temptation.
2 Corinthians 10:12 says “These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warning for us.”
What took place with King David should make believers attentive to the fact that if it can happen even with a man who was “a man after God’s own heart.” No one is above a fall.
Believers are blessed if at the end of their lives they are able to say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing” 2 Timothy 4:7-8.
