WA-RITE

Wa-Rite is a female-only club that meets on Friday mornings from 9-10 in Clubhouse 3, Room 1. Weigh-ins are from 8-8:45. Dues are $10 a year, plus 10 cents upon signing in. LW ID cards must be shown. Women who want support on their weight-loss journey and to meet like-minded people are welcome to stop by no later than 8:45 to weigh-in and complete the registration paperwork.

On June 20, Darleen Gardner shared that the members lost 18 pounds for the week. Joy Nasser was named the biggest loser for the second week in a row with a 3-pound loss. Nasser said she was committed to eating protein and vegetables and a piece of fruit to satisfy her sweet tooth.

Mary Kay Sherman reached her short-term goal and received $10 as a reward. She managed to lose weight despite being on a 23day cruise to Europe where she visited 14 countries. Sherman said she that eating small portions and doing a lot of walking at every port helped her reach her goal.

Jeanette Williams gave a speech on what happens in the brain when people overeat. She delivered her talk with humor, at times impersonating her Aunt Bonnie, a southern bell, which members of the club found entertaining.

Williams said that when people overeat foods high in sugar, fat and salt, it raises dopamine levels in the brain making it less responsive. The brain then requires larger amounts of food to achieve the same rewarding effect, which may lead to overeating as a way to chase that initial pleasure. Williams added that frequent overeating can easily become a habit that is hard to break.

The weekly food for thought was: “I love eating healthy and nourishing foods to reach my goal, and exercising makes me feel good.”
