HUD-funded program makes bathrooms more accessible for individuals making less than $94,750

Leisure World residents who have difficulty stepping into or out of their shower may qualify for a completely free bathroom upgrade through the City of Seal Beach’s Bathroom Accessibility Grant Program.

The program, funded by HUD, the County of Orange and the City of Seal Beach, has recently been allocated $180,000 for another round of remodels.

Many residents have taken advantage of this no-cost program in years past.

This grant is designed exclusively for Leisure World residents to help convert hardto- use bathtubs into safe, easyaccess showers.

The upgrades are custom-fit to existing bathrooms and typically include:

• Cutting down the fiberglass tub for low entry.

• Installing a new glass shower door.

• Adding grab bars or an in-shower bench.

• Replacing the toilet with a high-boy model.

All of these upgrades are made at no cost to qualifying residents. Work is completed by city-approved contractors.

To qualify, individuals must:

• Be a Seal Beach resident aged 55 years or older.

• Have an income under $94,750 for a single person, or under $108,300 for a couple (savings or assets won’t disqualify an applicant).

• Have a doctor confirm mobility or balance concerns.

To apply for the program, visit www.civicstone.com. On the top of the page, click “City of Seal Beach.” From here, people can print a paper application, fill out a digital application, read frequently asked questions and more.

Residents interested in the free program are encouraged to apply as soon as possible, as funds are limited.
