Poker Club Casino Tournament coming June 21
The June schedule of the Tournament Poker Club is a little different. There are no more regular tournaments in June, but on Saturday, June 21, there will be a special Casino Tournament in Clubhouse 6. The tournament will be run in elimination style until only one table of players remains. Players must be registered to play. Before June 21, club members pay $25 and guests $30. On the day of the tournament, if there are seats available, everyone pays $30. Registration fees include a continental breakfast. Registration and breakfast start at 9:30 a.m. and cards are in the air at 10:30. There will be no late seating. For pre-registration, contact Debbie Barner by June 20 at 325-721-0687. Be sure to leave a name and number if sending a text.
After a long break at the end of May, players were glad to be back at the tables on June 7. All 56 players were ready for the club volunteers to “shuffle up and deal.” High hand winners were Lonnie Ton (8-8-8-8-J) and Tom Pappas (5-5-5-5-A). Frank Sablan won the prize for playing and winning with the promo hand of 8-3.
As the winners of their original table, the final table players were: Larry Slutsky, first place; Tony Canfora, second; Jon Jones, third; Tom Pappas, fourth; Barry Brideau, fifth; Ray Lim, sixth; Bob Konier, seventh. Play continued at the final table until Slutsky and Canfora were head’s up. In the final hand of the match Canfora, who was holding A-5, went all in before the flop and Slutsky, holding 7-4, called. The flop came K-9-3, which was not much help to either player. The turn was a 6, giving Slutsky one-outer to a straight and still no help for Canfora. A 5 on the river gave Canfora a pair, but it was the card needed by Slutsky to complete his straight. With a straight from 3 to 7, Slutsky was the winner.
Slutsky has lived in Leisure World for 15 years and been a member of the club for 13 years. This was his fourth final table win. Slutsky plays poker with a couple of groups here in Leisure World and is also a member of the Duplicate Bridge Club. He is the proud great-grandpa of two great-grandchildren.
