Opera Club: ‘La Donna del Lago’ Opera Club: ‘La Donna del Lago’

All are invited to watch Gioachino Rossini’s “La Donna del Lago” on Tuesday, June 17, at 1:30 p.m. in the Learning Center in Clubhouse 3.

The story is based on the 1810 poem of Sir Walter Scott whose Scottish tales deeply influenced romanticism in Italian operas in the ensuing 20 years. The ideas of love, honor, reconciliation, political struggles, and the search for peace have withstood the test of time for centuries and deserve recognition in the present day.

Act 1, set in 16th century Scotland, introduces the beautiful Elena in a boat on Lake Katrine, singing of her love for Malcolm. She is spotted by King James V, disguised as a lost hunter Uberto, who immediately falls in love with her. On learning of her love for Malcolm, he gives her a ring saying if she ever needs help she should go visit the King. She hospitably gives him a lift across the lake and in a friendly manner introduces him to her father Douglas, who has already betrothed his only daughter to a rebel warrior, Rodrigo. When Rodrigo arrives, a clash ensues between the two men, who represent the warring factions of Rebels and Bards. Rodrigo challenges Uberto to a duel offstage, while Malcolm arrives to declare his love for Elena.

Act 2 opens in the royal Palace of the Bards to which Elena has come to seek the help promised in her ring. She requests the release of her father, Douglas, who as a Rebel has been imprisoned there. She then learns that Uberto is in fact King James V, who magnanimously forgives Elena’s father Douglas and all the Rebels, restoring peace and reuniting Elena with Malcolm.

The production is in Italian with English subtitles. People are encouraged to wear masks indoors, if desired. No dues or fees are collected.
