Next LW Men’s Golf Club tournament is June 11

An overcast but humid morning greeted the players in the LW Men’s Golf Tournament on May 28. Fifty-two golfers teed off starting at 7:30 a.m. at the 1,680 yard par 54 Turtle Lake Golf Club. The course was in good playing condition with well-trimmed fairways, greens and tee boxes. Each man competed for best net scores (gross score minus handicap), four circle holes (shots within a 5 foot radius rewarded), and two closest to the pin challenges.

For the front nine, the golfers teed off from their usual blue tees, but to make it interesting on the back nine, the men teed off from well forward red tees. This change in tee distance made club selection challenging, since some of the tee to green distances were under 70 yards with one hole under 50. Even so, with a dry course and good course conditions, it was anticipated that scoring would be good. However, since only 23 of the 52 men scored net at or under par, it was surprising that there was a near record 70 birdies and eight circle holes.

Closest to the pin on No. 2 was Dennis Jensen, and on No. 11 Dale Williamson was closest. Low net score for the round was Byron Schweitzer at 7 under 47, followed by Jae Choi and Bill Lyons at 6 under 48. Low gross for the tournament was Lyons (handicap of 0) at 6 under 48.

Average net scores by flight: A flight (16 players): 52.9 strokes; B flight (19 players): 56.5 strokes; C flight (17 players): 58.6 strokes.

A flight winners (handicaps of 0-5): Choi and Lyons, first place; Bob Barnum and Marc Rice, 5 under 49, second; Ralph Koizumi, 4 under 50, third; Yong J. Kim, 3 under 51, fourth; Pat Paternoster and Bob Turned, 1 under 53, fifth; and Seung Lee, even par, sixth.

B flight winners (handicaps of 6-10): Andrew Kim, 5 under, first place; Ron Steele, 4 under, second; Ryan Hong, 3 under, third; Hyon Shin and Dennis McMonigle, 2 under, fourth; Trai Nguyen, 1 under, fifth; Rod Osgood and Walter Kim, even par, sixth.

C flight winners (handicaps of 11-18): Schweitzer, 7 under, first place; James Farr, Dennis Jensen, Darry Holten and Mark Tal,1 under, second; Paul Shellenberger, even par, third.

The next men’s tournament is on June 11, and the next Guys and Gals tournament is on June 18.
