Coin Club: Hobo Nickels

Coin Club: Hobo Nickels Coin Club: Hobo Nickels

The Coin Club meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 1 p.m. in Clubhouse 3, Room 2, where members can have coins viewed and questions answered. The June 11 business meeting will be followed by an education session about hobo nickels at 1:30 p.m.

Hobo nickels are engraved coins, typically U.S. Buffalo nickels (minted from 1913 to 1938), that have been artistically modified— usually by carving new images into the coin’s surface. This form of hobo art began in the early 20th century and became popular during the Great Depression.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Light refreshments are provided, and several opportunities are available for group participation including a raffle, a 50/50 drawing, a coin auction and door prizes.

Ron Guth, Rocky Herrera and/or Andy Kmita will be in attendance to view coins and answer questions. The club’s annual membership fee is $10.
