Wa-Rite has another tie for the biggest loser
Wa-Rite is a femaleonly club that meets on Friday mornings from 9-10 in Clubhouse 3, Room 1. Weigh-ins are from 8-8:45. Dues are $10 a year, plus 10 cents upon signing in. LW ID cards must be shown.
Women who want support on their weight-loss journey and to meet likeminded people are welcome to stop by no later than 8:15 to weigh-in and complete the registration paperwork.
On April 18, members were informed by the recordkeeper Henrietta Peavy that the club lost a total of 19 pounds for the week, with another tie for the biggest loser between Maureen Baker and Jeanette Williams. They lost 2 pounds each.
Baker said the magic formula of losing her weight was more walking, chewing her food a little longer and employing portion control.
Williams said that yoga helped her to release stress and therefore eat less. She also talked about a breathing technique, called box breathing, also known as square breathing. It is a deep breathing technique that involves holding a breath on inhale and exhale for equal counts, typically four-five times.
Williams added that this structured breathing pattern helps to regulate the nervous system, reduce stress and improve focus.
The speaker of the week was Shirley LaBrecque. She talked about the importance of staying hydrated, which is a key to maintaining good health, keeping the joints lubricated and the blood pumping.
LaBrecque said that anybody can check how hydrated they are by looking at the color of their urine. It’ll be pale yellow in a well-hydrated body, and dark colored with amber tones in a dehydrated one. She added that constant dehydration may lead to urinary tract infections, heat strokes, heart problems, kidney failure and blood clots.
In older adults, certain medications may cause dehydration leading to fatigue, dizziness, headaches, muscle cramps and confusion, and sometimes to falls and injuries. The best way to prevent dehydration is to drink more water throughout the day.
Bev Bender, acting president for the day, shared the weekly food for thought: “Be kind. Give compliments. Love yourself.”
